Social Skills Training for Consumers with Serious and Persistent Mental Illness
From
a rationale for the relevance of social skills training to the needs of
chronic mental patients, this workshop provides an overview of the
various models of skills training developed and validated by the UCLA
Center. Videos, "live" modeling and demonstrations, and participant
practice are used to promote active directive learning. The
competencies needed by mental health and rehabilitation professionals
to conduct social skills training are systematically taught in this
workshop which can be flexibly designed for different patient or client
populations, clinical settings, and durations. Handouts and overhead
projections supplement the presentation. Exercises are done at the end
of the workshop to assist participants to apply and implement the
procedures of social skills training in their home clinical setting.
"After
watching a 'live' demonstration by PRC of social skills training with a
group of patients with schizophrenia from our local hospital, my three
case managers who came to the workshop turned to me and said, 'This is
exactly what we need to do with our clients!' We are now integrating
skills training into our intensive case management program.'" - M.S.W., Rochester, New York
