| Recovery from Schizophrenia: Is the Time Right? | ||||||||

With the emergence of evidence-based
pharmacotherapy and psychosocial services for schizophrenia,
optimal symptom and functional improvements are now more
readily available to practitioners and consumers. Long-term
follow-up studies in many countries of chronic patients
treated with high quality services as well as the results of
comprehensive, coordinated, consumer-oriented treatment of
young persons of schizophrenia demonstrate that remission of
disabling symptoms and normalized functioning in the
community has become a reality. In this video, Dr. Robert
Liberman provides an overview of the factors that lead to
recovery as well as a thoughtful, objective definition of
recovery. A patient with many hospitalizations and
disabling psychotic symptoms is profiled, showing in a
personal way how properly organized and delivered,
evidence-based treatments can enable an individual to live a
full and normal life in the community.
